Learning to See: Students of Stephen Cefalo Exhibition

May 3 – June 2, 2013

Realistic portraits, classical nudes, and faithful copies of old masterpieces are not the standard fare for contemporary gallery exhibitions. The latest exhibition at the Arkansas Arts Center’s Terry Mansion Community Gallery, Learning to See: Students of Stephen Cefalo is a cross-section of student work that encompasses a worldwide shift toward traditional practices in art education.

Several students from the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School organized a special exhibition featuring fellow students of Little Rock artist, Stephen Cefalo. The show includes Cefalo’s students from UALR, the Arkansas Arts Center (AAC), as well as privately instructed workshops. The show represents the seven-year span that Stephen has lived and taught in Little Rock, and students range from complete beginners to emerging professionals.  For most of the artists this will be a first exhibition opportunity.

More than 200 works were submitted, representing drawings and paintings in progress as well as finished works. The final selection by Stephen includes 46 works from artists who are his students at UALR and the AAC.
