ABOUT SUMMER THEATRE ACADEMY
Summer Theatre Academy was founded in 1983 to train students, ages 10-18, in the multiple disciplines of theatre performance and to bring them into direct, working contact with the creative process. It is a rigorous three-week, day-long program to which students are admitted only after a thorough audition process designed to assess skill level and commitment to the training program. In addition to the required core curriculum of pantomime, improvisation, movement, and voice and diction, students engage in a number of elective courses, including musical theatre, theatre history, theatrical make-up, scenic design, and multiple disciplines of dance. This full spectrum of classes is designed to bolster individual confidence while focusing and advancing the performance skills necessary to create in an ensemble atmosphere. These skills are then put into practice as students rehearse and perform an original play that is created for them by the company’s professional staff based on the students’ own input and energy.
The Summer Theatre Academy is designed to promote qualities that will be valuable to students not only in a theatrical setting, but in school and in whatever career they may choose as adults. Self-respect, focus, commitment to an idea, self-awareness, observational skills, communicational skills, positive self-image, and strong body and voice are all attributes emphasized in the Academy.
