A class for beginners! Students are introduced to the wood lathe through the construction of writing pens. Instruction covers the preparation of wood blanks, the use of two different finishing techniques, and pen assembly. Students will make at least two different pens to take with them when the class concludes. Pen turning requires less equipment and facilities than typical woodworking. The skills learned in pen turning translate to other small projects like bottle stoppers and pepper mills, as well as larger projects like furniture legs, bowls, and vessels. Materials and supplies for two pens are included in the workshop cost. Additional supplies may be purchased in the class if time allows.
