This workshop will modernize the ancient technique of Japanese shibori and explore easy methods for applying dye to silk scarves. Each student will create three to five unique wearable art pieces during the one-day workshop. No experience is necessary. All materials will be supplied including 100% silk scarves, a large variety of color dyes and gloves to keep your hands clean. Keep in mind that using dyes can be essy, so wear clothing that is appropriate. Tuition includes $35 materials fee.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Catherine Rodgers' formal education includes a Master of Business Administration, but she's always been a painter at heart. Her recent exhibitions include the Arkansas Arts Center's 55th Annual Delta Exhibition, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock's Erudite Exhibition, and the Inaugural Exhibition of the Mississippi River Museum. Her paintings are held in hundreds of private and business collections in Arkansas and across the United States. Catherine has been teaching at the Arkansas Arts Center since 2012 and her classes include color theory and Shibori scarves. Catherine also teaches art classes at Rancho la Puerta Resort and Spa in Tecate, Mexico and continues her formal studies in pursuit of a Master of Arts.

During this one-day workshop, each student will create a set of six high-quality 100% linen dinner napkins using the ancient technique of shibori. Shibori is a resist technique used to create patterns, which will make each napkin unique. These napkins make special one-of-a-kind gifts or keep them for your own! Over thirty rich-colored dyes will be supplied to pick from in addition to all supplies needed to create the linen napkins. No experience is necessary. Keep in mind that using dyes can be messy, so wear clothing that is appropriate. Tuition includes $35 materials fee.

This course will cover weaving basics. Students will learn the parts of the loom, the fundamentals of preparing a loom (warping), and will weave sample fabric as well as a full scarf. No experience is necessary. Tuition includes $25 materials fee.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Leigh Jacobs works as a Textile Designer for Dillards, Inc. She received her MFA at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and an M.S. in Textiles from North Carolina State University. She loves sewing, weaving, felting, printing on fabric and generally being creative.

This course will cover a variety of fabric printing techniques using both pigments and dyes. Students will create their own unique projects, including printed scarves, napkins and pillows. Design one-of-a-kind gifts to give others for special occasions or keep them for yourself! Tuition includes $50 materials fee.
