Little Dreams in Glass and Metal:

Enameling in America, 1920 to the Present

October 7, 2016 – December 31, 2016

Enameling – the art of fusing glass to metal through a high temperature firing process – gained widespread popularity in the United States in last half of the twentieth century. Now in the first decades of the twenty-first century, artists throughout the country continue to explore enamel in a variety of forms, finding new meaning and rich expressive potential in the vibrant color and layered depth of this time-honored medium. Organized by the Los Angeles-based Enamel Arts Foundation, Little Dreams in Glass and Metal is the first nationally traveling exhibition in more than fifty years to survey this dynamic field includes more than one hundred artworks from the Foundation’s collection of modern and contemporary enamels.

Glass Fantasies: Enamels by Thom Hall

October 7, 2016 – December 31, 2016

Organized by the Arkansas Arts Center to complement Little Dreams in Glass and Metal, a nationally traveling exhibition, Glass Fantasies is a retrospective exhibition containing more than forty enamels produced between 1977 and 1989 by longtime Arkansas Arts Center Registrar and artist, Thom E. Hall. Throughout his artistic career, Hall has worked in diverse media—watercolor, pencil, and paint—in his narrative portrayals of the human figure. Thus, it is no coincidence that Hall would bring this experience to his enamels, working in both the painterly Limoges-style and cloisonné techniques.

Jon Schueler: Weathering Skies

“The sky holds all things,” said Abstract Expressionist painter Jon Schueler (1916-1992). The twenty-five watercolors by Schueler in this exhibition are abstract, yet they are all about the evocative power of the sky. As the artist stated, “I’m deeply, almost dreadfully, concerned with nature.”

Cut, Pieced, and Stitched:

Denim Drawings by Jim Arendt

August 5, 2016 — October 23, 2016

As humans we are all products of our individual and collective life experiences—a patchwork of sorts. Jim Arendt, an artist from South Carolina, explores the shifting paradigms of labor and sense of place through his figural paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, and denim portraits. Organized in conjunction with the ACANSA Arts Festival, Cut, Pieced, and Stitched: Denim Drawings by Jim Arendt features ten, life-sized portraits of the artist’s family members and close friends made out of denim, a durable, traditional material used to manufacture jeans. “Denim seems created to be abused, worn out, patched, stained, and burnt through,” says Arendt. “Its characteristics are mirrored in the individuals I choose to represent.”

William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s Admiration:

A Special Loan

February 16, 2016 — October 30, 2016

This great French neoclassical painting of ladies admiring Cupid, the Roman god of love, comes as a special loan from the San Antonio Museum of Art. The painting is accompanied by a related drawing from San Antonio. The AAC complements these works with traditional academic drawings of the nude figure.

Museum School Exhibitions

Fire Meets Form:

Enamels by Burke Johnston

September 20, 2016 – December 4, 2016

Fire Meets Form: Enamels by Burke Johnston features twenty-five works by the artist, a Jewelry and Small Metals Instructor in the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School. The diverse works in the exhibition—ranging from small-format books and jewelry to larger panels—employ both the painted (Limoge) and cloisonné enamel techniques.

Throughout the year the Arkansas Arts Center displays works from its own collection. The galleries described below are filled with objects selected dating from over 600 years of Western art right up to the current day. The Arkansas Arts Center Foundation Collection specializes in drawings and contemporary craft, but there are also examples of paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, and decorative arts, among other media.

PAUL SIGNAC WATERCOLORS AND DRAWINGS:

THE JAMES T. DYKE COLLECTION

Ongoing

The scintillating watercolors and drawings of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French artist Paul Signac are the focus of two intimate galleries at the Arkansas Arts Center that have recently been redesigned and reinstalled. These works come from America’s finest collection of Signac’s graphic art, one hundred and thirty-three works that were assembled by Arkansan industrialist James T. Dyke. Mr. Dyke presented this magnificent collection to the Arkansas Arts Center in 1999.
